The annual ECDC Observership programme offers early- and mid-career scientists and health professionals the opportunity to visit ECDC in Stockholm and learn about the activities of the Centre, share their knowledge and experiences and engage with other observers and ECDC experts.

The programme typically occurs over 5 days in early September. The programme began in 2013 and over 90 Observers from all corners of the world have attended the programme. The program is made possible through the invaluable support of partner Learned Societies who provide funding and support for the Observership visits, including overseeing the application and selection process; the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and the European Society for Clinical Virology (ESCV).

Main objectives of the ECDC Observership programme are:

  • Increase understanding of roles and responsibilities of ECDC in supporting infectious disease prevention and control.
  • Understand ECDC’s role in supporting in European and global public health and the interplay between expert and competent bodies in the EU Member States, and with WHO and other global public health actors.
  • to acquaint observers with EU surveillance and epidemic intelligence systems
  • to share information about ECDC’s Public Health Microbiology Programme
  • to familiarise observers with ECDC’s key outputs and the way they are produced (e.g. risk assessments, scientific advice, support to laboratory network activities.)
  • to facilitate networking between ECDC experts and the other observers and to share information on activities.

ESCV offers a number of travel grants to selected  members to attend the ECDC Public Health Observership Programme. More information
