THE ABBOTT AWARD

The Abbott Award of the European Society for Clinical Virology is awarded annually for original contributions in the area of viral diagnosis. Only ESCV members within less than 10 active years in virology after receiving a PhD or MD degree, are eligible for the Award. A member may receive the Award only once. Candidates for the Award must have been an author of one or more papers on viral diagnosis published in a refereed scientific journal during the two years prior to the nomination. When the nomination is assessed, the candida­te’s previous scientific contribution in this field will also be taken into consideration.

After having been sponsored by Wellcome and Murex Diagnostics in the past the Award is sponsored from 2003 onwards by Abbott and has therefore been renamed into the Abbott Award.

Rules Abbott Award

  1. The Abbott Award of the European Society for Clinical Virology shall be awarded annually for original contributions in the area of viral diagnosis.
  2. Only members of the European Society for Clinical Virology within less than 10 active years in virology after receiving a PhD or MD degree, are eligible for the Award. A member may receive the Award only once.
  3. Candidates for the Award must have been an author of one or more papers on viral diagnosis published in a refereed scientific journal during the two years prior to the nomination. When the nomination is assessed, the candidate’s previous scientific contribution in this field will also be taken into consideration.
  4. Nominations for the Award may be made by any member of the European Society for Clinical Virology and should be seconded by another member. The nomination should consist of a written statement, outlining the candidate’s innovation in viral diagnosis (not more than 2 pages of A4), supported by a brief curriculum vitae which should include name, date of birth, brief details of the candidate’s career and a list of publications. Major contributions to viral diagnosis should be indicated by a * and copies of the abstracts of these papers attached. In the case of papers with more than one author the candidate’s contributions should be stated by the nominator.
  5. Three complete copies of the nominations should be received by the Secretary of the European Society for Clinical Virology usually by the 31st of January.
  6. Each year the Executive of the European Society for Clinical Virology will appoint a committee of three members to consider nominations. These should not include the proposers, the seconders or anyone from the candidate’s own laboratories. The Past-President should be one of the members and Convenor of the committee, which will make a recommendation for the Award by the end of March to be ratified by the Executive. If a candidate has been selected, the Award will be presented at the subsequent Society Meeting.
  7. The Award consists of a cheque of  €3.000 and a Certificate. In addition, the awardee has the privilege to give an oral presentation at the Annual Meeting of the ESCV. At this meeting the registration fee will be waived, and he/she is invited as a guest to the Society Dinner. Finally, the awardee  will be encouraged to write a review to the Journal of Clinical Virology, in consultation with the European Editor-in-Chief.
